Divine Dialogues with the
Fabulous FIve
The Fabulous Five have an extraordinary story. I came into the horse world at 60 – first time rider and lesson taker. My husband, John, and I became Virginia horse farm owners and loved every minute of the clinics we went to and that John gave at the farm. We loved our equine partners, Skye, Bella, Bandit, Red and Nic. But, as life’s adventures would have it, John had health issues and I couldn’t take care of the farm and horses, so the horses were warmly welcomed at a non-profit in Pennsylvania. All five, together. So rarely would this happen in the horse world. They could stay together as a family, a herd.
Every single morning, after they were gone, for two years, I cried. I missed them so much. I didn’t understand this enormous longing to be with them – they had left a hole in my heart.
This year, 2023, in March, we received a call from the Pennsylvania non-profit saying that because of Covid, their donations were almost non-existant, they would have to close. They would find a great home for The Five. We looked at each other, living in our new, much smaller retirement home, now in Florida, and, said to our Pennsylvania contact: “No, we bring them back here to us!” And, the Fabulous Five would return home to us and we would deal with the new expense, the need for a boarding facility and a method to get them down here.
Bella, age 9. Skye’s filly, raised by us. A blessing, curious and loving! Always wants to do more with you, as a human partner.
Bandit, number 2 guy! Sweet and loving at 24 years of age. Bandit teaches you loyalty. He will climb a tree for John and those he loves! He also loves my coffee!!
Nic, Bandit’s best bud. Age 15. Re-loved by us and those in PA, to help him get over the fear of the way he was treated early on. What a sweetheart! Loves children!
Skye, the lead mare, age 20. Skye was my first horse, at age 62. Love her so much and she taught me to ride and take more chances in life. What a determined gal – taught me greater empowerment as a female.
